The story of why, when, how you decided to move here (or stay here): I am a native Rochesterian who moved back to the area post college graduation (2000) for a job at the University of Rochester.
Where you went to undergraduate college / graduate school: Michigan State University
Degree(s) you earned: I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Michigan State University. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Forensic Serology and DNA through an online program at the University of Florida.
Where you work now and your job title: I am currently employed as a Forensic Biologist at the Monroe County Crime Laboratory.
Where do you live? I am a homeowner in Greece.
What do you like about life in Rochester? For me, my family and close network of friends are the main reasons I plan to stay. I also enjoy my job, my home, and keep a busy social calendar filled with local events.
What do you do for fun? I am a member at the Rochester Athletic Club and often attend their pilates class to help get in shape. I take belly dance at the Goddess Hour studio, which is very fun and great exercise. I attend social events through the Rochester Young Professionals, particularly the social networking events that are coordinated monthly with groups such as the Young Lawyers Section and Young CPAs. I am a member of two winetasting groups, the Rochester Winos and Women for Winesense, both of which hold monthly tastings at various restaurants. I occasionally attend free salsa dancing lessons on Thursday nights at the Tapas 177 Lounge, and often go for their live music on Saturday nights. I also enjoy a variety a great dining and nightlife with friends. In the warm weather, there are endless outdoor festivals and live music events to attend.
What would you tell a college student (who is trying to decide where to live after graduation) about what life is like here post-college? I would tell a college student that for a small city, Rochester has a diverse population with a variety of cultural, social, and professional activities they can become involved with. Another big attraction is the affordable cost of living.
What's the downside to living here? My least favorite part about living in Rochester is the long, cold winter. Summer is beautiful here, however, if you are not a skier the winter can seem endless.
What's the best first step to making friends and finding your way around? Getting involved is key! I have met many people and made new friends through work, Rochester Young Professionals, being involved in dance, going to the Rochester Athletic Club gym, and attending various social and cultural activities Rochester has to offer.
